One of a series of oval insets at the top of each of the main lights of the window, this one shows part of an ox, with the letters “LUCAS”. The ox is the symbol of the evangelist Luke, and signifies the sacrifice of Jesus, and it seems likely that the other three evangelists appeared in three of the other four ovals: Matthew, represented by a winged man signifying the humanity of Jesus; Mark, represented by a lion signifying the kingship of Jesus; and John, represented by an eagle, signifying the spiritual heights to which his gospel soars. The fifth oval contains the pelican.
